Is Your Google Business Profile Costing You Customers? Common Mistakes to Avoid

July 29, 2026

For most local businesses, a Google Business Profile is the first impression a potential customer gets, often before they ever visit your website. It's what shows up in the Map Pack, in local search results, and in Google Maps itself. And yet many small businesses set theirs up once, years ago, and never touch it again. That neglect can quietly cost you visibility and customers.

Here are some of the most common mistakes we see, and how to fix them.

Incomplete or Outdated Information

An outdated phone number, an old address, or missing hours might seem like small details, but they create real friction for potential customers and send a signal to Google that your listing isn't actively maintained.

The fix: Review your profile regularly to confirm your hours, phone number, website link, and service areas are current, especially around holidays or seasonal schedule changes.

Neglecting the Reviews Section

Reviews are one of the strongest local ranking factors, and one of the most common things potential customers check before choosing a business. A profile with few or outdated reviews, or one where negative reviews go unanswered, can quietly push customers toward a competitor.

The fix: Actively request reviews from happy customers, and respond to every review, positive or negative. A thoughtful response to a negative review often builds more trust with future customers than the review itself takes away.

Choosing the Wrong Business Categories

Your primary and secondary categories tell Google what kind of business you are and directly affect which searches you show up for. Many businesses either pick an overly broad category or miss out on relevant secondary categories entirely.

The fix: Choose the most specific primary category that accurately describes your core business, and add relevant secondary categories to capture more of the searches you actually want to show up for.

Skipping Photos and Updates

Profiles with little to no photos, or photos that haven't been updated in years, tend to perform worse and convert fewer clicks into calls or visits. Customers want to see what your business, products, or space actually look like today.

Ignoring the Q&A and Posts Features

Google Business Profile allows for posts (similar to social media updates) and a public Q&A section, both of which are frequently left completely blank. An active profile signals to both customers and Google that a business is engaged and trustworthy.

The fix: Post updates periodically, whether it's a promotion, an announcement, or a recent project, and monitor the Q&A section so you can answer questions before a customer has to guess.

Duplicate or Unverified Listings

Sometimes multiple listings exist for the same business, often created accidentally through past address changes, rebrands, or third-party directories. This splits your reviews and search visibility across multiple profiles instead of consolidating it into one strong listing.

The fix: Search for your business name on Google to check for duplicates, and have any extras merged or removed.

Why This Matters More Than Ever

As more local searches happen directly on Google without a customer ever clicking through to a website, your Business Profile has become one of the most important pieces of digital real estate your business owns. A well-maintained, accurate, and actively managed profile can be the difference between showing up first, or not showing up at all.

Not every page on your website has the same job. While your Home page, About page, and Services pages help visitors explore your business, a landing page is designed with a single goal: to get someone to take action. Whether you're running Google Ads, a social media campaign, or an email promotion, sending visitors to a dedicated landing page often leads to better results than sending everyone to your Home page.
