Most marketing professionals agree blogs are a marketing asset. A well maintained, relevant blog builds a brand's voice, often improves Search Engine Optimization (SEO), and provides useful information. With that said, here are three reasons why your business shouldn't blog:
1. You Don’t Have Time
Simply put, writing a blog post takes time. There’s research that needs done, photos that need taken, and illustrations that are necessary to convey a point. All these things take time away from running your business. Nothing is worse than starting a blog and adding a few posts, then realizing you don’t have the time to keep it up. Website visitors - your potential customers - won’t be impressed when they find your blog hasn’t been updated since Thanksgiving of last year.
Other Options: If you have things to tell clients and potential customers or have time-sensitive events to share, Social Media is a great alternative to blogging. Facebook, in particular, is an incredibly useful tool for building your brand and sharing your business ideas.
2. You Don’t Have Enough To Say or Struggle Writing It
Not every small business owner can keep churning out relevant content week after week, month after month. Even if you can, can you do it well? Search Engines and website users will pass judgement on irrelevant or poorly written content. If you do have expertise in your field, but writing isn’t your forte, don’t worry. There are other methods to share your knowledge and establish yourself as an industry expert.
Other Options: Facebook Live or a video series is a great way share information on the subjects you know best. Video allows you to speak about your products and services while also showing viewers samples of your work. Videos can be used in many places, such as on your social media channels, website, and via email newsletters. They say a picture is worth a thousand words...surely a good video surpasses that!
3. Your Website Is Lacking Content
A common mistake is to get excited about creating a blog and writing great content every week, without putting enough content on your website first. The goal of a blog is to supplement an already mature, complete website with detailed and specific content. If your website needs an update or is missing vital information about your business, hold off on the blog and develop some creative content for your website first.
Other Options: Instead of having a blog, first add a "Behind The Scenes" page with a few videos and some photos of your staff. Another option is to highlight the process behind your favorite product, service, or menu item to draw interest.
Never forget that your blog should supplement your website, not the other way around.
