Why Small Businesses Should Stick with a Local Marketing Agency

A woman in a black shirt is sitting at a desk in front of a computer.

If you are a small business, you may wonder if a small marketing firm is right for you.  While huge marketing companies may boast impressive client lists and a wide array of services, they may not always be the right choice for a small business.

Some marketing or advertising agencies use big buzz words to impress clients with their services, but don’t have any of the staff, resources, or experience to measure up when working with a local, small business.

Here are 5 reasons why you should consider a local marketing agency.

We Understand the Local Market (and know our clients)

This is one of the most important reasons to use a local marketing agency.  If your marketing is failing to hit its mark, your marketers may not have a deep understanding of your brand.  One of the main reasons this may be is because a non-local marketing agency may not know the region and who you are trying to reach.

For example, you need a marketer who knows to buy Google ad words for “carne asada” in Southern California instead of “steak” or “beef burrito.” An advertising agency in New York wouldn’t know the difference.

Our team knows the communities we are targeting because we live here and spend time here.    We are active members at 13 area Chambers of Commerce, and our owner and CEO, Aaron Gobidas is on the board of the Vista Chamber of Commerce.  He also spends most of his time in the neighboring Vista Village (in downtown Vista).  It’s also not uncommon for our staff members to see business owners we work with out and about while we are running errands.

If you are working with a marketing firm that isn’t local or is offering a remote service, how can you build these types of relationships?  Our clients get to know us and can stop by the office anytime.  We have cold brew on tap!

We Serve as Your Local Project Manager

At GoBeRewarded, we do all the work in-house.  This means you don’t have to find someone else to do the work for you or worry about who is doing what.  For example, we design websites from start to finish.  The client doesn’t need to find another person to do some of the additional work required to finish the project, like pictures, graphics, or writing.  Our in-house web designers, photographers, and ad project managers take care of everything.

This also means a local staff member from the North County San Diego area is working on your project and they understand your needs. We don’t outsource a thing.

You wouldn’t want someone from another part of the world that's never been to San Diego attempting to market your business to clients here would you?  How could they understand the area?

No Time Zone Worries

Some big marketing companies often rely on freelancers from overseas to do their writing, photography, or design work.  This may save you money short-term but can have some consequences in the long run.

For example, a current employee previously worked as a project manager for a Fortune 500 company.  Some days he was on a phone call with a co-worker in the U.K. at 6 a.m.; other days, he was on a Zoom call with another co-worker from China at 6 p.m.  It’s a nonstop battle to work around everybody’s schedule when working with different time zones and no one is ever happy.

When working with a local marketing agency, time zones are never an issue.  You can simply call someone and set-up a meeting without worrying about thinking about what time it is there or here. This is another reason why understanding and being a part of the local marketing you are selling is important.

More Personalized Attention with Face-to-Face Meetings

As a local marketing agency, you’ll get a lot more personal attention than if you worked with a mass marketing conglomerate. Initial meetings often happen face-to-face with our owner and sales team in our conference room.  During our onboarding process, you will get to know the creative and technical team members who will be working on your website or Google Ads.   You’ll be able to let us know if you are happy or unhappy with the direction the project is headed.

As a local agency, we are going to be more nimble and can easily adjust the strategy and direction of your project.  A meeting can be scheduled easily over the phone and adjustments can be made to your website in less than a day.  With a large marketing national agency, these changes could take weeks or months.  Strategy with national firms has to be planned out sometimes weeks in advance.

I worked with a public relations firm that maintained a national advertising account.  Every time a change was made, they spent a day driving down to the client’s headquarters only to spend a month making the adjustments.

We Understand How the Local Market Works

We have a deep understanding of your needs and brand.  We understand the audience that you are trying to reach.

For example, when working with a local dentist, we were able to redefine the radius of the local Google ads based on our knowledge of their location. Instead of focusing on just Carlsbad, we included Encinitas, Solana Beach, Del Mar, and other coastal areas that share the same demographics as Carlsbad. If this client had been working with a marketing agency from Chicago or even Los Angeles, it’s unlikely they would have really understood where this dental agency was located.  We were able to make more effective marketing suggestions based on our knowledge of the local area.

Search engine optimization, or SEO, is often talked about as one thing, but it actually includes several different types of work. Two of the most important are on-page SEO and off-page SEO . Both influence how your website performs in search results, but they focus on different parts of your online presence. What Is On-Page SEO? On-page SEO refers to everything you optimize directly on your website to help search engines understand your content. This includes things like: Page titles and meta descriptions Headings and page structure Keyword usage in the content Internal linking between pages Image optimization and site speed The goal of on-page SEO is to make your website clear, organized, and easy for search engines to understand. What Is Off-Page SEO? Off-page SEO refers to signals that happen outside of your website but still influence how search engines evaluate it. The most common example is backlinks , which are links from other websites pointing to yours. When reputable websites link to your business, search engines see that as a sign of credibility. Off-page SEO can include: Backlinks from other websites Business directory listings Local citations Online mentions of your business Why Both Matter A well-optimized website is important, but it is only part of the picture. Search engines also look for signals that your business is trusted and referenced elsewhere online. Strong SEO typically comes from a combination of both a well-structured website and credible external signals.

Most business owners only hear about DNS when something stops working. It sounds technical, but the concept is actually straightforward and extremely important to understand. DNS is the system that tells the internet where your website, email, and other services live. More importantly, whoever controls your DNS effectively controls access to your online presence. That is why every business owner should make sure they own their domain and have access to their DNS settings. What DNS Is DNS stands for Domain Name System. Think of it as the internet’s phonebook. When someone types your website address into a browser, like www.yourbusiness.com , DNS translates that domain name into the numerical IP address where your website is hosted. Once the correct server is found, the website loads. Without DNS, people would have to type long strings of numbers instead of simple domain names. What DNS Controls DNS does more than just point visitors to your website. It also directs other critical services connected to your domain, including: Your website hosting Your business email Subdomains like blog.yourbusiness.com Verification records used by tools like Google or Microsoft In short, DNS acts as the traffic controller for many parts of your digital infrastructure. Why Business Owners Should Care One of the most common problems businesses run into is losing access to their domain or DNS because it was registered under a developer, agency, or former employee. When that happens, you may not be able to: Move your website to a new provider Change email services Connect marketing tools Fix website or email issues Your domain and DNS act as the gateway to your entire digital presence. If you do not control them, someone else does. What Every Business Should Do Every business owner should make sure of three things: Your business owns the domain name You know where it is registered and have login access You can access the DNS settings if needed Even if a developer or marketing agency manages things for you, the account should always belong to the business.
